LAST CHANCE TO BUY AN ECO-FRIENDLY SHOPPING BAG FROM INDIA - HELP THE CHILDREN’S PLACE

05/09/2008 - posted by Jan

LESS THAN 15 BAGS LEFT!!
From fair trade artisans in India, to eco-friendly shopping in Kansas City, to helping The Children’s Place care for children who are victims of abuse and neglect, World’s Window is inviting customers to once again be a part of a “Circle of Caring”. In February World's Window in Brookside sold beautiful hand-block printed and hand-quilted re-usable cloth shopping bags from artisans in India. The money helped build a Habitat for Humanity house in El Salvador. A new shipment of the bags have just arrived from India and The Children’s Place will now benefit from the sales.

The original idea for “Circle of Caring” came in Fall ‘07 when the Buerges met a wonderful "fair trade" company working in India with textile artisans. “We fell in love with their colorful quilt-patched cloth bags. We knew we would enjoy using them every time we went shopping,” says Jan Buerge. “ We thought, why not order 200 for our store and use them for some special project?” Funds from those sales accompanied a volunteer group from Kansas City to El Salvador for a “Holy Week Build” in March.

Now World’s Window is teaming up with The Children’s Place, a nurturing, caring place for the very youngest victims of abuse, neglect and other childhood traumas. The Children’s Place therapists, teachers, staff and volunteers are dedicated to helping children experience healing and gain new hope for the future. Within the Kansas City community and beyond, the agency’s specialized expertise in working with traumatized young children has made The Children’s Place a recognized leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Fifty percent of the $10-a-bag proceeds will go directly to The Children’s Place.

The lined bags are made in India with many different brightly printed fabrics - all from locally grown and spun cotton and dyed with 100% natural dyes - all block-printed by hand with carved wooden blocks - with many different combinations of quilt squares represented. The inside of the bag also states: "Fair Trade = Justice + Peace + Love". The Buerges are sure the bags will provide years of enjoyment - in their beauty and sturdiness AND for being environmentally friendly AND for contributing to The Children’s Place. Jan Buerge says, “Come by the store today to choose your own special shopping bag - or 2 or 3 or 4! Be a part of our ‘Circle of Caring’ and help The Children’s Place.”

WORLD'S WINDOW CLOTHING TRADE-IN BACK FOR THIRD YEAR

04/05/2008 - posted by Jan

Maybe they don’t like the color anymore. Maybe they really want to clean out their closets. Maybe they’ve lost weight. Maybe they’ve gained weight. Whatever the reason, World’s Window customers are once again getting the opportunity to trade in their old clothing for credit towards new items. As a part of their 24th anniversary celebration, customers are returning clean, gently used clothing previously purchased at World’s Window. In exchange, customers receive special “stamps” towards a $25 credit on new purchases and the donated items will be given to “Rosie’s Closet” at Rose Brooks Center.

Owner Jan Buerge is delighted to partner again with Rose Brooks as the recipient of the clothing donations because of their mission to break the cycle of domestic violence so that individuals and families can live free of abuse. “This project is a perfect fit for our store and our customers. At World’s Window our mission is to celebrate the creativity of the human mind, spirit and experience and our customers love the idea of helping others. It’s an added bonus that they get some credit towards something new and exciting for Spring.”

Larry Ross of Tower Dry Cleaners has again agreed to donate cleaning for any items needing extra attention. “We want to make sure all items donated are absolutely ready to find a second home with a woman making a new start,” says Buerge. “Last year our customers donated over 400 wonderful clothing items and Tower Dry Cleaners was just great in cleaning and pressing over 70 items. We are lucky to have a Brookside neighborhood cleaner willing to join us for this project.”

Additional details about the clothing trade-in are available at World’s Window.

BUY A $10 RE-USABLE FAIR TRADE SHOPPING BAG - HELP BUILD A HOUSE IN EL SALVADOR!

01/31/08 - posted by Jan

At World's Window we love connecting artisans with customers and supporting fair trade and great causes. During February you can "have it all" - you can purchase a beautiful hand-block printed and hand-quilted re-usable cloth shopping bag from artisans in India for $10 and all of the money will go towards building a Habitat for Humanity house in El Salvador. How's that for being part of a circle of caring for our earth?!

Last fall we met a wonderful "fair trade" company working in India with textile artisans. We fell in love with their colorful quilt-patched cloth bags that we knew we would enjoy using every time we went shopping. We were even more excited to discover that the block-print artisans could print our store logo on the inside of the bag. Why not order 200 for our store and use them for some special project?

In late Fall, World's Window owner Lonnie Buerge agreed to lead a Habitat for Humanity building crew to El Salvador during Holy Week this year (leaving March 14). As a part of their commitment to the project, the group needs to raise money toward building a house in El Salvador as well as pay for all their travel expenses. As owners we decided the bag sales would be a perfect way to raise money for a house and come "full circle" in our little

The bags are so lovely - made in India with so many different bright fabrics - all from locally grown and spun cotton and dyed with 100% natural dyes - and so many different combinations of quilt squares represented! The inside of the bag also states: "Fair Trade = Justice + Peace + Love". We're sure they will bring you years of enjoyment - in their beauty and sturdiness AND for for being environmentally friendly AND for contributing world-wide through the house in El Salvador. BUT the number of available bags is limited - we're already down under 100, so don't delay. Come by the store today to choose your own special shopping bag - or 2 or 3 or 4! Be a part of our circle of caring. OR, you can order your bags in our e-store - look for "Bag for El Salvador: Fund Raiser".

PARKING IN BROOKSIDE - YOU GOTTA LOVE WALKING IN OUR BEAUTIFUL NEIGHBORHOOD!

12/12/07 - posted by Jan

**All I want for Christmas is a parking lot . . . a parking lot . . . ** (same tune as last year!)
I would love to promise that you'll always find a parking spot right in front of our store, but you'll REALLY need our wind-up "parking angel" to get that to happen. Parking continues to be our biggest challenge in Brookside - especially during holidays! One suggestion (except Sunday morning) is to try the Wornall Baptist Church lot west of Border Star. Brookside merchants are now sharing in the maintenance/snow removal of that lot in exchange to use some parking spaces. It's an easy walk from there to our store. We often park on 62nd Terrace either east or west of Wornall which is also a fairly easy walk. Otherwise there is always Brookside parking by the tennis courts and behind Bank Midwest which will still let you have a lovely stroll through Brookside!

GIFT WRAPPING FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

11/29/07 - posted by Jan

For over 16 years the staff at World's Window have wrapped holiday gifts beside a donation box for Habitat for Humanity. Each present is carefully wrapped and decorated with our bright, fluffy hand-made raffia bow and paper ribbon. Gift wrapping is always free, but once again we have a donation box out for Habitat for Humanity. The World's Window staff hopes that while we add sparkle to your presents you will help us add sparkle to the lives of some folks seeking better lives in Habitat-built homes. All proceeds will be divided between the local Habitat chapters.

649 TRAVEL AMENITIES DONATED TO TIANELLO'S "PROJECT AMENITIES"

12/04/06 - posted by Jan

Throughout the Summer and Fall World's Window customers collected little travel size amenities for a special project organized by Tianello's Leslie Littrell, Sales Manager for Tianello. Located in Los Angeles, Tianello is a wonderful, caring women's clothing manufacturer of lovely Tencel and Bemberg separates. As Leslie wrote, "We at Tianello are no strangers at helping the needy women of our city." Last year Tianello employees donated over 200 bags full of travel amenities for homeless women in a downtown LA women's shelter. With our generous World's Window donation of a huge 649 items, many more women will be able to receive gifts this year. Thanks to all who contributed!

92 SCHOOL KITS DONATED AROUND THE WORLD

05/10/06 - posted by Jan

During the 2005 holiday season we had signs/pictures around that let customers know that for every sale over $100 we contributed an item to school kits for hurricane-devasted areas in the south and for countries around the world. Each school kit included notebooks, pencils, a box of colored pencils, a ruler, and an eraser packaged in a colorful home-sewn drawstring bag. When the season was over and we tabulated the number of school kits we needed to complete, it totaled 80!! Since "yours truly" was sewing the drawstring bags, I panicked. But we found out that by sending donation money, the bags and contents could actually be purchased "in country" which would help the local economies and give someone else the paying job of making the bags. By sending the money "in country" it actually would yield 92 bags, so that seemed like a great option! I still sewed 12 bags (I wanted to!), our staff filled them with the needed school supplies and we delivered them several weeks ago to the Material Resource Center of M.C.C (Mennonite Central Committee) in North Newton, KS.
