OUR FAVORITE EARTH CREATIONS CROP TEE IS BACK!! FOR A LIMITED TIME 02/09/10 - posted by Jan
I begged. I complained. I begged some more. The result? We just received over 80 specially-ordered boxy crop tees - the original Earth Creations short-sleeved, organic hemp/cotton tee they started with. It's the favorite with our missy customers. It's flattering without being tight. It breathes in our hot, muggy summers.
We ordered some of EC's newest colors: Topaz, Slate, and Patina, along with the most popular Mud and Natural. We cannot do little re-orders, so now's the best time to get one in each color. Come in, call us or shop on-line.

“SHARE THE LOVE” MID-WINTER COAT COLLECTION HELPS WARM UP WOMEN AND CHILDREN AT ROSE BROOKS CENTER 01/25/10 - posted by Jan
The holiday “warmth” drives are over, but the needs continue. New women and children arrive at Rose Brooks Center each day to escape domestic violence and start anew. Warm, winter coats for both women and children are needed and can be dropped off at World’s Window in Brookside during their “Share The Love” coat donation drive January 29th - February 13th.
The weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day are usually promoted with images of flowers, candy, candlelight and love. For many women, their daily experiences are filled with fear and injury rather than expressions of love. The staff at World’s Window is wrapping some warmth - literally and figuratively - around the women and children at Rose Brooks Center with donations of winter coats.
Buerge is delighted to partner again with Rose Brooks as the recipient of the coat donations because of their mission to break the cycle of domestic violence so that individuals and families can live free of abuse. Tower Cleaners has also joined the project to provide cleaning for the few coats that might need a bit of touch-up. “This project continues to be a perfect fit for our store and our customers. At World’s Window our mission is to celebrate the creativity of the human mind, spirit and experience and our customers love the idea of helping others. It’s an added bonus that they get a discount towards something new and exciting for Spring,” says Buerge.
In exchange for each coat donation, World’s Window customers will receive a 20% coupon towards new purchases, and there's no limit to the number of coats a customer can donate. The more they bring, the more coupons they receive. However, Buerge asks that every coat donated be new or in clean, excellent condition so that they can be used right away.

EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS - MEXICAN DAY OF THE DEAD 10/16/09 - posted by Jan
Every October we have wonderful folk art from Mexico arrive - paper cut-outs, ceramic skulls, and lots and LOTS of skeletons. No, it's really not scarey - just check out our selection of Halloween items - now THOSE are scarey! So, what's with all the skeletons? They're all part of the folk art celebration called el Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead which corresponds with All Souls and All Saints Day. It's a joyful celebration as folks prepare a family altar, or ofrenda, or memory table to remember and welcome back the spirits of loved ones who have died. There are no witches, demons and monsters, just whimsical skeletons depicting life but honoring the eternal.
Our own Day of the Dead altar is set up in our back room. Della has done a beautiful job of creating this ofrenda and we have been adding pictures of friends and family members who have died. Della also created a Memory Wall where you are welcome to write a remembrance to a loved one or a friend. The ofrenda and Memory Wall will be on display through Monday, Nov.2nd. Come celebrate with us and add your memories.

A HOLIDAY GIFT THAT GIVES TWICE - BUY AN ECO-FRIENDLY SHOPPING BAG FROM INDIA - HELP HABITAT FOR HUMANITY KANSAS CITY 12/23/09 - posted by Jan
From fair trade artisans in India, to eco-friendly shopping in Kansas City, to helping Habitat for Humanity Kansas City build decent, affordable houses, World’s Window in Brookside is inviting customers to once again be a part of a “Circle of Caring”. A new shipment of the bags has just arrived from India and the money raised will again go to Habitat for Humanity Kansas City.
The original idea for “Circle of Caring” came in Fall ‘07 when the Buerges, owners of World’s Window in Brookside, met Manish Gupta of Handmade Expressions, a wonderful fair trade company working in India with textile artisans. “We fell in love with their colorful quilt-patched cloth bags. We knew we would enjoy using them every time we went shopping,” says Jan Buerge. “ We thought, why not order 200 for our store and use them for some special project?” Funds from the sales of over 800 bags have raised funds for Habitat for Humanity, both in Kansas City and in El Salvador, and Rose Brooks Center and The Childrens Place, both in Kansas City.
For the holiday season World’s Window is teaming up again with Habitat for Humanity Kansas City Habitat KC is a Christian ministry working to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income families in the greater Kansas City metro area. Habitat brings together people with resources and people in need to build decent, affordable homes. These houses are sold to those in need at no profit. Founded in 1979, it is the seventh affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat Kansas City has built more than 200 houses in the Ivanhoe and Center City neighborhoods of Kansas City Missouri and continues to revitalize blighted urban neighborhoods and instill a sense of pride and hope in our inner-city communities. Fifty percent of the $10-a-bag proceeds will go directly to Habitat for Humanity Kansas City.
The lined bags are made in India with many different brightly printed fabrics - all from locally grown and spun cotton and dyed with 100% natural dyes - all block-printed by hand with carved wooden blocks - with many different combinations of quilt squares represented. The inside of the bag also states: "Fair Trade = Justice + Peace + Love". The Buerges are sure the bags will provide years of enjoyment - in their beauty and sturdiness AND for being environmentally friendly AND for contributing to Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. Jan Buerge says, “These bags make a perfect, eco-friendly, affordable holiday gift. Come by the store today to pick up 2 or 3 or 4! Be a part of our ‘Circle of Caring’ and help Habitat.” World’s Window is located at 332 W 63rd Street in Brookside. Bags can also be purchased on the World’s Window website at www.worldswindowkc.com.
World’s Window has partnered with Habitat in other past projects as well. For over 10 years the staff at World’s Window have wrapped holiday gifts for donations to local Habitat affiliates. Customers love the colorful hand-made bows and distinctive “World’s Window” wrapping and are generous in their donations. “My staff has already been making bows for days,” laughs Jan Buerge in anticipation of a very busy holiday season of gift wrapping. “Our customers tell us they always look forward to a World’s Window package under the tree. It’s another way a gift from World’s Window gives twice - to the happy receiver and to Habitat for Humanity.”
